John is gone, and not surprisingly the album sounds like a step back, into their earlier catalogue. I was at the time really happy that John's replacement was Dave, especially after all the guitarists they had gone through on tour and in the studio. The album isn't bad; it just doesn't seem like a natural step to take after BSSM. But it has its moments of metalish funk and the group singing that the band had left behind on Mothers Milk. Anyway, it's them trying their best with what they have, but after a four year wait, it feels like it was put together in four months using a 'RHCP song writing formula' book.
